Drug Uses
Cardizem is used for treatment of supraventricular tachycardia, a rhythm disturbance of the heart. It is also used for controlling heart rate response to other rhythm disturbances, specifically, atrial fibrillation and flutter. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How Taken
Use Cardizem as directed by your doctor.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Cardizem, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Cardizem, if you have if you have heart failure or have had a recent heart attack with lung congestion, heart block, low blood pressure, a very slow heart rate, or abnormal heart rhythm, have kidney or liver disease, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Cardizem while you are pregnant. Cardizem is found in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Cardizem. Some medicines may interact with Cardizem. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Cardizem if you have sick sinus syndrome or have second– or third–degree heart block and do not have a pacemaker, if you have atrial fibrillation or flutter and a pre–excitation syndrome (extra conduction pathway in the heart), such as Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome (WPW) or Lown–Ganong–Levine syndrome (LGL) or if you are receiving injectable beta–blockers (eg, metoprolol) or erythromycin. Cardizem may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Cardizem. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Cardizem before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Cardizem and might require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment. Do not use Cardizem in children. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– Constipation, dizziness, facial flushing, headache, weakness. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately– allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, and swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, swelling of the feet or hands, tender, bleeding, or swollen gums.
Storage
Store Cardizem at 59 – 86 °F (15 – 30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Cardizem out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Cardizem overdose are– confusion, difficulty breathing, especially when lying down, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, lightheadedness, especially upon standing, nausea, slurred speech, very slow heart rate.
More Information
Cardizem may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. These effects may worsen if Cardizem is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Cardizem with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Cardizem should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
